Four types of puzzle games—and how each makes you think

“Puzzle game” covers very different experiences. The useful question is not which type is smartest; it is which kind of decision sounds fun right now.

A Sudoku grid, a chess position, a falling-block board, and an arithmetic path can all be called puzzles. They feel different because each one makes uncertainty come from a different place: missing information, an opponent, moving space, or a sequence of operations.
